Content communications

Some of my work involves sensitive information, so the case study presented here is high level and limited. Branding has been removed from unreleased screens. If you have any questions, contact me to discuss.

The situation

Internal communication is its own adventure. As a newly embedded content team our partners in marketing, product, engineering, et al respected our work, but didn’t fully understand the logic and skill behind it. The lack of shared vocabulary slowed our collaborations and made us less effective.

The task

Build a basic understanding of content design fundamentals, vocabulary, benefits, and deliverables to fully integrate the team and optimize outcomes. Bonus points for doing it without disrupting the schedules of our busy product partners.

The action

  • I ran workshops on content fundamentals focused on solving current, high-impact problems

  • During the workshops, I introduced core concepts and vocabulary and showed off some of the work involved in building the best practices

  • I documented the outcomes of each workshop, tying them to actual decisions and wins for current projects

  • I lead the creation of reference materials, including a department level style guide and product level content strategy guidelines
